‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?
Phototherapy is definitely experiencing a moment. You can now buy illuminated devices designed to address dermatological concerns and fine lines as well as muscle pain and gum disease, recently introduced is a dental hygiene device equipped with small red light diodes, described by its makers as “a breakthrough in personal mouth health.” Internationally, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. “It feels almost magical,” notes Paul Chazot, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Certainly, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, essential for skeletal strength, immune function, and muscular health. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, additionally, triggering the release of neurochemicals and hormones while we are awake, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Types of Light Therapy

Colored light diodes, he says, “aren’t typically employed clinically, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, help boost blood circulation, oxygen absorption and dermal rejuvenation, and promote collagen synthesis – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Research exists,” comments the expert. “But it’s not conclusive.” In any case, given the plethora of available tools, “it’s unclear if device outputs match study parameters. We don’t know the duration, ideal distance from skin surface, if benefits outweigh potential risks. There are lots of questions.”
Specific Applications and Professional Perspectives
One of the earliest blue-light products targeted Cutibacterium acnes, microorganisms connected to breakouts.
