Chinese Ice Dancers Face Investigation Following Displaying Prop Weapon at Event
The International Skating Union have launched an investigation following two Chinese ice dancers appeared with an object resembling a toy ballistic missile at a grand prix figure skating event.
Broadcast video showed the skaters sitting with a sizable prop shaped like a rocket marked “DF-61” while waiting for their scores at the “kiss and cry” zone on Saturday.
The DF-61 represents a recently introduced China-produced land-based long-range weapon capable of carrying nuclear weapons, which was unveiled at a military parade recently.
“The ISU is aware that an inappropriate plush item appears to have been among those tossed onto the rink by audience members following a performance during the competition,” the ISU commented in an emailed statement.
The item was then held by the skaters after their performance. The ISU apologizes for the incident and will look into it more deeply.”
The duo finished in eighth place of 10 pairs in the ice dance event, which was won by the American pair of the United States.
